Autumn Dreamer

(October 2023) Babcock State Park, WV

Description: This was the first time in over 25 years I had seen fall colors as vibrant as those in my childhood memories. I grew up in MN where the autumn colors are vibrant reds, rich oranges and bright yellows. After moving away from MN, I lived in warmer drier states and the leaves mostly turned brownish orange and fell quickly. This was my first chance to explore WV in autumn and I was enchanted! This image is the first in the Secret Garden Series and I wanted a dreaming image to symbolize childhood memories and how they come back to us subtly through scents, music, colors and the feel of the wind on our faces.

What you don't see: This park was actually very crowded that day. There were many wider compositions I wanted to create, but it was impossible. Instead, I used it as a challenge to create magical images in small mundane places. This was actually a stone wall near to the bathrooms! I thought of the thousands of tourists who unseeingly pass by this pretty location on their way to the bathroom or out again to the big park attraction of the old mill. How many places of quiet beauty are we missing in pursuit of the big 'glamourous' stuff?
